About

The Friends have arranged a visit to the Khoesisoros Museum at the University of Cape Town.

The Drennan museum contains bottled and plastinated specimens of normal anatomy as well as models and skeletal material. This space has in recent years been used mostly as a teaching venue thus the display area consists of cabinets around the walls containing systematic anatomy. Images and objects from the past and reflecting the different divisions in the department have been incorporated in these display cases. The tour will include a look at some of the skeletal material and information on methods of preservation and body donation.

We then move to the nearby Pathology Museum which contains thousands of bottled specimens representing hundreds of different diseases. This collection started in the 1920s and was actively expanded and well used until the 1970s. In 2009 a project was initiated to revive and update the museum, with the emphasis on digitisation and e-learning, re-inventing this museum as the Pathology Learning Centre. The tour will cover aspects of the history of the museum and those who contributed to it, look at some interesting specimens and at behind-the-scenes work, as well as a demonstration of new technological initiatives and exploration of the museum website.
