About

Cape Town Opera Premieres a Vibrant, Multilingual Adaptation of The Magic Flute!

Cape Town Opera proudly announces the premiere of a brand-new, vibrant production of The Magic Flute, designed especially for young audiences. Directed by Elizma Badenhorst, with Frankie van Straten as Co-Creator and Production Designer, the production blends live operatic performance with the magic of puppetry, bringing Mozart’s classic to life in a colourful, imaginative way. This playful adaptation features two uniquely formatted versions tailored specifically for primary and high school learners, making it an engaging introduction to opera for all ages.

Audiences can expect a lively cast of bird characters, portrayed through a mix of to-scale and oversized puppets crafted from recycled and found materials. These characters animate the stage with humour, charm, and interactive storytelling. To enhance accessibility and audience connection, the production features spoken narration in English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa, creating an inclusive, multilingual experience that resonates with a diverse South African audience

This abbreviated production is particularly valuable for high school learners taking music as a subject, as The Magic Flute is a prescribed opera in the curriculum. Yet, with its playful tone, visual storytelling, and multilingual narration, it also serves as a delightful introduction to opera for younger learners and families. Performances take place at the Joseph Stone Auditorium, offering schools and families a unique cultural experience that blends music, drama, puppetry, and education.

The cast features Cape Town Opera’s talented Judith Neilson Young Artists, including Khayakazi Madala as Pamina and Mongezi Mosoaka as Tamino, with former Judith Neilson Young Artist Alida Scheepers appearing as the Queen of the Night.

This production is part of Cape Town Opera's ongoing commitment to making opera inclusive, accessible, and inspiring for the next generation.
