There has been a ‘seaweed revolution’ of production for multiple uses through cultivation (aquaculture) in Asia in the last 50 years. Seaweed cultivation has numerous documented benefits, and South Africa has had a small but significant seaweed industry, largely based on collections from natural populations, for many years.
Professor Emeritus John Bolton will discuss the ‘seaweed revolution’. Will it happen in the Western Hemisphere, can South Africa play a role, and how can we work towards environmental, social and economic sustainability in the development of the seaweed industry?
