Yangthola!

About

Based on a street dweller with multiple income streams, Yangthola! Explores the devastating effects of the capitalist system on every hardworking black human. A one hander that makes use of various elements such as puppetry, heightened performance, music and Poor Theatre.
Yangthola! makes a special return with a special one performance in the Ramolao Makhene Theatre to mark the opening of the Yes Let’s Experimental Festival 2025. Featured as a guest performance, this work stands as one of the festival’s greatest success stories - first developed on the Yes Let’s platform, later expanded into a full production, and now coming back to inspire a new wave of festival headliners.

A poignant and captivating one-person play, Yangthola! tells the remarkable story of a street dweller and recycler navigating life in South Africa’s unforgiving urban landscape. Through inventive puppetry and storytelling, discarded objects are transformed into living treasures, revealing a world where the overlooked gains new meaning.

Both mesmerizing performance and urgent social commentary, Yangthola! reflects on the resilience of the marginalized while challenging audiences to confront the realities of our capitalist system. It is a celebration of human spirit, resourcefulness, and the beauty found in what society discards.
